The C Major Pentatonic scale (C D E G A C`) is a subset of the C Major scale (C D E;F G A B C`) or C Mixolydian scale (C D E F G A B♭ C`. There is no 4th and 7th .

The chords for C Major Pentatonic scale are from the Ionian/Major scale with the VII7 chord borrowed from the Mixolydian scale.

Practice Tips

  • Root, (the letter name of the scale) to the OctaveAscending,
  • Octave to RootDescending
  • Random Order — Start on any note of the scale and end on any note of the scale. The scales can be extended below and above the root on the staring string and above the octave on the ending string.
  • Start on Any Finger, Any String — The QUICKSTART Scale and Arpeggio Series of books have example fingering solutions for starting on each finger and string.
